Product overview

Rubber grass mats built to handle the toughest conditions — 100% recycled rubber, available in 16mm and 23mm thickness, cut to 1.0m x 1.5m. Protect your lawn, driveway, pathway or garden from vehicle traffic, foot traffic and erosion — no groundwork required.

Each mat covers 1.5m² and links to the next with pegs and ties, so you can protect anything from a single muddy gateway to a full overflow car park. The open honeycomb lets grass grow up through the mat and rainwater drain straight down, so the surface stays green, firm and mud-free all year round.

Why Choose Our Rubber Grass Mats?

  • Heavy-duty protection: Withstands car, van and light vehicle traffic without crushing or displacing. Ideal for grass driveways, overflow parking, pathways and high-footfall garden areas.
  • 100% recycled rubber: Manufactured from post-consumer recycled rubber — no virgin materials used. Durable, sustainable and built to last outdoors in all UK weather conditions.
  • Grass grows through: Open-hole design (25mm holes) allows grass to grow upward and remain healthy, blending seamlessly into the lawn for a natural look.
  • Simple installation — no groundwork: Lay directly onto existing grass or prepared ground. Secure using optional anchor pegs and ties. Covers an area of 1.5m² per mat — connect multiple mats for larger coverage.
  • Protects soil from erosion: Stabilises the ground surface on slopes, banks and high-traffic areas. Prevents ruts, mud and compaction.
  • Wheelchair and mobility friendly: Firm, stable surface suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility aids — ideal around accessible gardens, care homes and public spaces.
  • Non-slip, all-weather surface: Textured rubber provides grip underfoot and under wheel in wet, icy and muddy conditions.
  • Two thickness options: 16mm — ideal for pedestrian pathways, garden borders and light use. 23mm — recommended for vehicle access, driveways and heavy-duty applications.

Where rubber grass mats are used

Use Thickness Why it works
Grass driveways & parking on grass 23mm Spreads the weight of cars, vans and caravans so the lawn never ruts.
Playgrounds & school play areas 16mm or 23mm Impact-absorbing safety surface tested to BS EN 1177, with grass still growing through. The 23mm mat is tested to a 3.3m critical fall height.
Horse gateways, paddocks & yards 23mm Stops poaching and deep mud where hooves churn the ground.
Garden paths & dog runs 16mm A firm, mud-free route that still looks like lawn.
Wheelchair & pushchair access 16mm or 23mm Stable, level surface across grass for care homes, schools and venues.
Overflow & event parking 23mm Lift and reuse after the event, or leave down permanently.
Golf course & sports club paths 16mm or 23mm Buggy and trolley routes that stay green instead of wearing to mud.
Caravan & motorhome hardstanding 23mm Keeps the van level on grass without sinking over winter.

What surfaces can I lay rubber grass mats on?

Existing grass is the ideal base: lay the mats straight onto the lawn, peg them down and the grass grows through within a few weeks. They also work on compacted soil, gravel, hardcore, concrete and tarmac, where they add grip and cushioning rather than grass cover. On banks and slopes, start at the top and peg every mat so the run cannot creep downhill.

Cutting, shaping and edges

Trim mats with a sharp utility knife or jigsaw, cutting along the web between the holes, to fit around posts, trees, kerbs and drain covers. Cut edges do not fray or unravel. For a neat finish on a path or play area, keep the outer edge pegged at every corner so nothing lifts.

Lifespan and maintenance

Recycled rubber does not rot and is unaffected by frost, rain and sunlight, so the mats stay flexible and in one piece season after season. Once the grass is through, mow straight over the mats with the blade set above the mat surface. Mud washes off with a hose or stiff brush, and individual mats can be lifted and relaid if you ever change the layout.

Rubber grass mats or grass protection mesh?

Rubber mats give instant, cushioned protection and absorb impact, which makes them the right choice for play areas, gateways, paths and anywhere the ground is already wearing. Grass protection mesh is a lighter plastic roll that reinforces healthy turf over large areas such as fields, overflow car parks and caravan pitches. Many customers use both: mats at the gate and pinch points, mesh across the open ground. Call us if you are not sure which suits your site.

16mm or 23mm? Here's the straight answer.

Both mats are 1m × 1.5m and made from the same recycled rubber. The difference is how much weight and wear they are built to take. If in doubt, choose 23mm.

How to lay rubber grass mats

No digging, no sub-base and no specialist tools. Most jobs are done in an afternoon.

  1. Step 1

    Measure & order

Measure the length and width of your area and let the calculator above work out how many mats you need. Add pegs and ties to fix them down.

  2. Step 2

    Lay, peg & tie

Mow the grass short, lay the mats straight onto it, peg each mat into the ground and cable-tie neighbouring mats together.

  3. Over the next few weeks

    Grass grows through

The grass grows up through the holes and knits the mats into the ground, protecting the roots from wear, mud and ruts.

How many do I need?

Use the calculator at the top of this page. Enter the length and width of your area in metres and it works out how many you need, rounding up so you're never short.

Should I choose 16mm or 23mm?

16mm suits lawns, garden paths and foot traffic. 23mm is our heavy-duty mat for driveways, car parks, playgrounds and horse gateways. If you're not sure, choose 23mm.

How long does it take for the grass to grow through?

In the growing season (spring to early autumn) grass usually starts to come through within a few weeks. It grows more slowly in winter. Water the area during dry spells.

Do I need pegs and ties?

We recommend them. Pegs anchor each mat to the ground and cable ties join neighbouring mats so they can't shift or lift. Choose the pegs & ties option above.

Can I mow over them?

Yes. Once the grass has grown through, mow as normal with the blades set a little higher than usual.

Can I drive and park on them?

Yes. Choose a heavy-duty mat (22mm or thicker) for driveways, overflow car parks and field access. The mats stop wheels rutting the ground and protect the grass roots.

Can I get advice before I order?

Yes. Call our team on 01282 270214 (Mon–Fri, 8:30am–5pm) or email sales@grassmatsco.co.uk and we'll help you choose the right product and quantity.

Yes. UK delivery is free on every order, with no minimum spend. Orders are dispatched within 1 working day.

Can I return it?

Yes. You have 14 days to return or exchange your order. See our returns policy for details.
