Product overview

Park on grass without wrecking it. These heavy duty 22mm rubber grass mats spread the weight of cars and vans across the ground, so tyres don't sink, spin or leave ruts. Grass grows up through the open cells and roots the mats into the ground, leaving you a firm, mud-free parking area that still looks like lawn.

Why use rubber grass mats for parking?

  • No more ruts or mud. Each 1.5m x 1m mat spreads the load from every tyre over a far wider area, so the ground stays level through wet winters.
  • Stays green and permeable. Rain soaks straight through to the soil. Because the surface is permeable, you don't need planning permission to use it for front-garden parking in England (a dropped kerb is a separate matter for your council).
  • No digging, no sub-base. Lay straight onto mown grass, peg down and tie together. Most driveways are done in an afternoon and can be used the same day.
  • Follows uneven ground. Flexible rubber sits flat over bumps and dips where rigid plastic grids can rock or crack.
  • Grip in all weathers. The studded surface gives tyres and feet traction in rain and frost.
  • Built to last. Made from 100% recycled rubber that won't rot or go brittle in frost. Mats can be lifted and re-laid if your plans change.

What can park on them?

For the best result, drive on and off in a straight line and avoid wheelspin or turning the steering while stationary, especially in the first few weeks while the grass grows through.

How many mats do I need?

Area Size Mats
Wheel tracks only 2 strips, each 1m x 6m 8
Single parking bay 2.4m x 4.8m 8
Single driveway 3m x 6m 12
Caravan pitch 3m x 7.5m 15
Double driveway 6m x 6m 24

For other sizes, use the calculator at the top of the page. Wheel tracks are the cheapest option for a single car. Full coverage is better where cars turn, reverse or park in different spots. Mat only, or with pegs and ties?

For parking, choose pegs and ties. Tyres push and pull on the mats every time a car brakes or turns. Pegs stop the mats creeping, and cable ties keep neighbouring edges flush so they can't lift or curl. Only choose mat only if you already have suitable fixings.

Tips for a long-lasting parking area

  • Mow the grass short and fill any deep ruts or hollows with topsoil before laying.
  • Stagger the joints like brickwork so tyres don't run along a seam.
  • Peg every mat and cable-tie every joint.
  • Lay between spring and early autumn for the fastest grass growth. Mats laid in winter work straight away, but the grass takes longer to come through.
  • Bare or muddy ground? Seed it first, lay the mats over the top and water in dry spells.

Parking questions

Can I park on them straight away?

Yes. The mats protect the ground from day one. For the neatest finish, keep traffic light for the first few weeks while the grass grows through and roots in.

Will the mats move when I drive on them?

Not when they are pegged and tied. Once the grass has grown through, its roots help hold the mats in place too.

Can I use them on a slope?

Yes, on gentle slopes. Choose the pegs and ties option and add extra pegs on steeper ground. Call us if you're unsure.

Will they damage my lawn?

No. Light and rain still reach the grass, so it stays alive under the mats. Parking straight onto bare grass is what causes the damage.

How to lay rubber grass mats

No digging, no sub-base and no specialist tools. Most jobs are done in an afternoon.

  1. Step 1

    Measure & order

Measure the length and width of your area and let the calculator above work out how many mats you need. Add pegs and ties to fix them down.

  2. Step 2

    Lay, peg & tie

Mow the grass short, lay the mats straight onto it, peg each mat into the ground and cable-tie neighbouring mats together.

  3. Over the next few weeks

    Grass grows through

The grass grows up through the holes and knits the mats into the ground, protecting the roots from wear, mud and ruts.

How many do I need?

Use the calculator at the top of this page. Enter the length and width of your area in metres and it works out how many you need, rounding up so you're never short.

How long does it take for the grass to grow through?

In the growing season (spring to early autumn) grass usually starts to come through within a few weeks. It grows more slowly in winter. Water the area during dry spells.

Can I mow over them?

Yes. Once the grass has grown through, mow as normal with the blades set a little higher than usual.

Can I drive and park on them?

Yes. Choose a heavy-duty mat (22mm or thicker) for driveways, overflow car parks and field access. The mats stop wheels rutting the ground and protect the grass roots.

Can I get advice before I order?

Yes. Call our team on 01282 270214 (Mon–Fri, 8:30am–5pm) or email sales@grassmatsco.co.uk and we'll help you choose the right product and quantity.

Is delivery free, and how fast is it?

Yes. UK delivery is free on every order, with no minimum spend. Orders placed before 14:00 (UK time) on a working day are dispatched the same day; later orders are dispatched the next working day. Transit takes 3 to 5 working days, so most orders arrive within 3 to 6 working days. See our Shipping Policy.

Can I return it?

Yes. You have 14 days to return or exchange your order. See our returns & refund policy for details.
