16mm or 23mm? Here's the straight answer.

Both mats are 1m × 1.5m and made from the same recycled rubber. The difference is how much weight and wear they are built to take. If in doubt, choose 23mm.

Lay them yourself. No groundwork.

Rubber grass mats go straight onto your existing grass, so there's no digging, no sub-base and no specialist tools.

  1. Step 1

    Measure & order

Multiply the length by the width, divide by 1.5 and round up, or let the calculator at the top of this page do it. Add pegs and ties to fix the mats down.

  2. Step 2

    Lay, peg & tie

Mow the grass short, lay the mats straight onto it, peg each mat into the ground and cable-tie neighbouring mats together.

  3. Over the next few weeks

    Grass grows through

The grass grows up through the holes and knits the mats into the ground, protecting the roots from wear, mud and ruts.

How many grass mats do I need?

Each mat is 1m × 1.5m, so it covers 1.5m². Multiply the length by the width of your area in metres, divide by 1.5 and round up. The calculator at the top of this page does it for you.

Should I choose 16mm or 23mm?

16mm suits lawns, garden paths and foot traffic. 23mm is our heavy-duty mat for driveways, car parks, playgrounds and horse gateways. If you're not sure, choose 23mm.

How long does it take for the grass to grow through?

In the growing season (spring to early autumn) grass usually starts to come through within a few weeks. It grows more slowly in winter. Water the area during dry spells.

Do I need pegs and ties?

We recommend them. Pegs anchor each mat to the ground and cable ties join neighbouring mats so they can't shift or lift. Choose the pegs & ties option when you order.

Can I mow over rubber grass mats?

Yes. Once the grass has grown through, mow as normal with the blades set a little higher than usual.

Can I drive and park on them?

Yes. Choose 23mm for driveways, overflow car parks and field access. The mats stop wheels rutting the ground and protect the grass roots.

Are they suitable for playgrounds?

Our playground grass mats are tested to BS EN 1177. The right thickness depends on the fall height of your play equipment, so tell us what you're installing and we'll advise before you order.

Is delivery free, and how fast is it?

Yes. UK delivery is free on every order, with no minimum spend. Orders are dispatched within 1 working day.

Can I return my mats?

Yes. You have 14 days to return or exchange your order. See our returns policy for details.
