Caravan & Motorhome Grass Hardstanding

Keep a caravan or motorhome on grass without sinking, ruts or a churned-up route on and off the pitch. Rubber grass mats and turf reinforcement mesh spread the weight of the van across the lawn and give the wheels a firm base on a drive, in a garden or across a campsite pitch, while the grass grows through – a green hardstanding with no excavation, no concrete and no hardcore.

Which product do I need?

• 23mm rubber grass mats: 1m x 1.5m mats laid under the wheels, jockey wheel and corner steadies, and along the route on and off the pitch. Instant protection from the day they go down.
• Heavy duty car park grass mats 22mm: the same idea in a 1.5m x 1m format for twin-axle vans, tow cars and storage compounds.
• Turf reinforcement mesh: 2m x 25m rolls that reinforce whole pitches and access routes; the grass knits through over a growing season and the surface is rated for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

Mats or mesh for a caravan pitch?

Mats suit a van that is parked in the same place and a lawn that is already soft or rutted: they work immediately and can be lifted and relaid. Mesh suits a healthy lawn you want to reinforce over the whole pitch and driveway, laid in spring or summer so the grass can grow through before the van arrives. Many owners use mesh for the run-in and 23mm mats where the wheels and steadies sit.

Planning tips

• Check your vehicle's weight before choosing. If your motorhome is over 3.5 tonnes, call us before ordering mesh.
• Focus on the route the wheels take on and off the pitch, where ruts form first, and double-mat the turning point.
• Measure the van's footprint and add a metre each side for walking around it and reaching lockers.
• Peg every mat at the corners: pegs stop the mats creeping when the van is manoeuvred.
• Grass under a vehicle left in one place for months will suffer from lack of light. The mats stop sinking and rutting, but move the vehicle now and then if you can.
