Product overview
Green rubber grass mats that look like part of the lawn from the day you lay them. Each 22mm mat is 1.5m x 1m, covers 1.5m² and stops grass turning to mud, ruts and bare patches, while the grass keeps growing up through the open holes.
Black grass mats show as a black grid until the grass grows through, which takes a few weeks in summer and much longer in winter. Green mats blend in straight away, which is why they're the choice for gardens, play areas, schools and venues where looks matter.
Why choose green?
- Blends in from day one. No black grid across your lawn while you wait for the grass to come through.
- Hides the bare patches. Under swings, at the bottom of slides and along busy paths, grass never fully recovers. A green mat keeps those spots looking green all year.
- Does the same job as black. It stops mud, ruts and root compaction while the grass keeps growing.
Key features
- 22mm thick, 1.5m x 1m: one mat covers 1.5m². Large mats mean fewer joins and a quicker lay.
- Tested to BS EN 1177 for a critical fall height of up to 3.3m: impact-absorbing surfacing for play areas. Ask us for the test certificate before ordering for play equipment.
- Grass grows through: open-ring holes let grass, light and rain through, so the lawn stays alive underneath and water drains straight into the ground.
- Grip in the wet: textured rubber gives feet, wheels and buggies grip on wet grass.
- Wheelchair and buggy friendly: a firm, even surface over soft or muddy ground.
- UV-stabilised green: colour pigment and UV stabiliser help the mat hold its colour outdoors.
- Easy to cut: trim with a sharp utility knife or jigsaw to fit around trees, posts and play equipment.
- 100% recycled rubber.
Where to use green grass mats
- School and nursery playgrounds: under and around play equipment, and on busy routes across the field.
- Garden play areas: under swings, slides, climbing frames and trampolines.
- Dog runs and pet lawns: stops dogs wearing muddy tracks along fences and to the back door.
- Garden paths: to the shed, washing line, bins or greenhouse.
- Wheelchair-accessible paths: in parks, care homes, gardens and allotments.
- Golf courses and sports clubs: walkways around tees, greens and the clubhouse.
- Wedding and event venues: walkways and entrances where black matting would spoil the look.
Driving or parking on it?
The 22mm green mat takes ride-on mowers and the occasional car. For a driveway or car park in daily use, or a field gateway, choose our 23mm heavy-duty black grass mats. They cost less per m² and hide tyre marks. For horse gateways and yards, see our rubber grass mats for horses.

Using it under play equipment
Under BS EN 1176, grass on its own is generally only acceptable under play equipment with a free height of fall of up to 1m. Above that, you need impact-absorbing surfacing tested to BS EN 1177, with a critical fall height at least equal to the equipment's free height of fall. The surfacing also has to cover the whole impact area, which usually reaches at least 1.5m around the equipment, and further for swings and higher platforms. This 22mm mat is tested to a critical fall height of up to 3.3m.
Tell us what you're installing and its free height of fall on 01282 270214 and we'll confirm whether this mat is right and how many you need. Ask us for the BS EN 1177 test certificate for your records or your playground inspector.
How many do I need?
Divide your area in m² by 1.5 and round up, or use the calculator at the top of the page. A 6m x 3m play area (18m²) needs 12 mats. Allow a few extra if you'll be cutting around trees or equipment.
Order all your mats together. As with all coloured rubber, the shade of green can vary slightly between production batches, so mats from the same order match best.
Expert laying tips
- Fill any hollows with topsoil and seed bare patches before you lay. The mats sit flatter and the grass knits in faster.
- Butt the mats tightly together with no gaps.
- Peg every mat and cable-tie it to its neighbours so no edge can lift into a trip hazard. This is essential on playgrounds and paths.
- Where you can, let the grass establish through the mats before heavy use.
Green mat questions
Will the green fade?
The rubber is UV stabilised to hold its colour. As with any coloured rubber outdoors, expect the green to soften slightly over the years in full sun. Once the grass grows through, the mats blend in even further.
Should I choose green or black?
Choose green when you want the mats to disappear into the lawn: gardens, play areas, schools and venues. Choose black for vehicle access, or when the lowest cost per m² matters more than looks.
How to lay rubber grass mats
No digging, no sub-base and no specialist tools. Most jobs are done in an afternoon.
-
Step 1
Measure & order
Measure the length and width of your area and let the calculator above work out how many mats you need. Add pegs and ties to fix them down.
-
Step 2
Lay, peg & tie
Mow the grass short, lay the mats straight onto it, peg each mat into the ground and cable-tie neighbouring mats together.
-
Over the next few weeks
Grass grows through
The grass grows up through the holes and knits the mats into the ground, protecting the roots from wear, mud and ruts.
Questions about this product

Tell us about your project and we'll recommend the right product and quantity.
01282 270214How many do I need?
Use the calculator at the top of this page. Enter the length and width of your area in metres and it works out how many you need, rounding up so you're never short.
How long does it take for the grass to grow through?
In the growing season (spring to early autumn) grass usually starts to come through within a few weeks. It grows more slowly in winter. Water the area during dry spells.
Can I mow over them?
Yes. Once the grass has grown through, mow as normal with the blades set a little higher than usual.
Can I drive and park on them?
Yes. Choose a heavy-duty mat (22mm or thicker) for driveways, overflow car parks and field access. The mats stop wheels rutting the ground and protect the grass roots.
Is it suitable for playgrounds?
Products marked BS EN 1177 are tested as impact-absorbing playground surfacing. The right thickness depends on the fall height of your play equipment, so tell us what you're installing and we'll advise before you order.
Can I get advice before I order?
Yes. Call our team on 01282 270214 (Mon–Fri, 8:30am–5pm) or email sales@grassmatsco.co.uk and we'll help you choose the right product and quantity.
Is delivery free, and how fast is it?
Yes. UK delivery is free on every order, with no minimum spend. Orders placed before 14:00 (UK time) on a working day are dispatched the same day; later orders are dispatched the next working day. Transit takes 3 to 5 working days, so most orders arrive within 3 to 6 working days. See our Shipping Policy.
Can I return it?
Yes. You have 14 days to return or exchange your order. See our returns & refund policy for details.
