Product overview
Take the cold and the jar out of concrete stable floors
Heavy duty 6ft × 4ft rubber stable mats give your horse a warmer, softer and more sure-footed floor than bare concrete, and cut down the bedding you buy and muck out. Every mat is reversible, with raised bubble studs on one face and a ribbed, fluted hammer pattern on the other. Choose 12mm, 18mm or 18mm interlocking.
Supplied to private owners, livery yards and equestrian centres across the UK.
Why horse owners choose these mats
- ✓Warmer than bare concrete. A layer of dense rubber stops the floor drawing heat out of your horse, which matters most when they lie down on winter nights.
- ✓Kinder on legs and joints. A cushioned surface with a little give, for horses that spend long hours standing in. The 18mm mats give the most cushion.
- ✓Grip underfoot. Raised bubble studs give hooves something to bite on, helping to reduce slips on a wet floor.
- ✓Less bedding, quicker mucking out. The mat does the cushioning, so you only need a light bed on top to soak up urine. That means less to buy, barrow and store.
- ✓Reversible. Two usable faces. Turn the mats over to bring a fresh surface into use and get more years out of them.
- ✓Stays where you lay it. Heavy, dense rubber lies flat without glue or fixings when the mats are butted tightly wall to wall.
- ✓Made from recycled rubber. Heavy duty regenerated rubber gives waste rubber a long second life on your yard.
Which thickness do I need?
Best value and lightest
For ponies and lighter horses, horsebox and trailer floors where weight counts, tack and feed rooms, kennels, garages and home gyms.
Extra cushion and warmth
50% thicker than 12mm. Our pick for horses stabled for long hours, bigger breeds, older horses, and cold or draughty yards.
Locks together, no gaps
Jigsaw edges lock each mat to the next so they can't creep apart, keeping bedding, urine and grit out of the joins. Best for horses that paw or box-walk, wash bays, barns and walkways.
How many mats for my stable?
Each mat covers 2.23 m². Use the calculator at the top of this page, or go by these common stable sizes. The figures allow for cutting mats to fit and using the offcuts to fill gaps.
| Stable size | Floor area | Mats |
|---|---|---|
| 10ft × 8ft (pony) | 7.4 m² | 4 |
| 10ft × 10ft | 9.3 m² | 5 |
| 12ft × 10ft | 11.1 m² | 5 |
| 12ft × 12ft (standard horse) | 13.4 m² | 6 |
| 14ft × 12ft | 15.6 m² | 7 |
| 16ft × 12ft | 17.8 m² | 8 |
| 14ft × 14ft (large horse or foaling box) | 18.2 m² | 9 |
Tip: measure wall to wall at floor level. Interlocking mats lose a little coverage at each joint, so for a wall-to-wall fit add one extra mat, or call us with your measurements and we'll work it out for you.
Where to use them
Wall-to-wall flooring for day and night stabling, from pony boxes to foaling boxes.
Cut-to-fit 12mm mats add grip and cushioning for travelling without the extra weight of 18mm.
A non-slip, cushioned place to stand that hoses clean.
Lay on a firm, level base for a cleaner standing area. For muddy gateways on grass, use our rubber grass mats for horses.
Dense rubber protects the floor under racks, benches and dumbbells and deadens noise.
Calf pens, lambing sheds, dog kennels, workshops and milking parlour walkways.

Laying and care tips
- Sweep the floor and fill any dips first. Mats follow the floor beneath them, so a hollow will collect liquid. A slight fall towards a drain or the door is ideal.
- Lay the bubble side up for grip, with the ribbed side down so liquid can run away underneath. You can turn the mats over later to use the other face.
- Start in a back corner and work towards the door, pushing each mat tight against the last so bedding can't work into the joins.
- To cut a mat, chalk the line, then score along a straight edge with a sharp utility knife, making several passes. Bend the mat back as you go to open the cut. A drop of washing-up liquid on the blade helps it glide.
- On interlocking mats, trim the jigsaw lugs off along the walls for a neat, straight edge.
- New recycled rubber smells rubbery at first. The smell fades over a few weeks in a ventilated stable, and washing the mats before you lay them helps.
- Keep a light bed of shavings, pellets or straw on top to soak up urine. Muck out daily, hose and squeegee as needed, and lift the mats to wash the floor underneath once or twice a year.
- The mats are heavy, especially the 18mm. Move them with two people or a sack truck.
Common questions
Which side goes up?
Most owners lay the bubble side up for grip and cushioning, with the ribbed side underneath. Both faces are usable, so you can turn the mats over to bring a fresh surface into use.
Do I still need bedding?
Yes, but much less. The mats provide the cushioning and warmth, so a light bed is enough to soak up urine and keep your horse clean.
Will the mats move about?
Laid tight wall to wall, the straight-edged mats are heavy enough to stay put. For horses that paw, dig or box-walk, or for large open areas, choose the 18mm interlocking mats, which lock together and can't creep apart.
Can I use them in a horsebox or trailer?
Yes. The 12mm mats are usually the better choice here because they keep weight down. Cut them to fit with a utility knife, and check that your vehicle's payload allows for the extra weight.
Are they suitable for a home gym?
Yes. 6ft × 4ft stable mats are a popular, hard-wearing gym floor for garages and outbuildings. Choose 18mm under racks and wherever weights get dropped.
