Product overview
17mm interlocking rubber playground tiles that click together to give play areas, nursery yards, paths and patios a firm, cushioned, anti-slip surface. Each black tile measures 914mm x 914mm (3ft x 3ft), covers 0.84 m² and locks to the next with built-in interlocking edges. No glue, no fixings and no specialist tools. Finish open edges with our matching ramped edge strips.
Why choose these tiles
- Click-together install: interlocking edges hold the tiles in place, so you can lay a small play corner or a whole yard in an afternoon.
- Grip in all weathers: the textured solid top gives sure footing, wet or dry.
- Kinder than concrete or tarmac: 17mm of rubber is far softer underfoot when children trip or fall at ground level.
- Neat, low-trip edges: finish open edges with ramped edge strips in high-visibility yellow or black.
- Indoors and out: weatherproof for year-round outdoor use, and just as good in soft play rooms, halls and gyms.
- Easy to keep clean: sweep, or hose down.
Check your fall height first
This 17mm tile is designed for play areas, walkways and low-level play. Under BS EN 1176, impact-absorbing surfacing tested to BS EN 1177 may be required where play equipment has a free fall height above 600mm, or where it has forced movement, such as swings and roundabouts. In those zones, the surface's tested critical fall height must match or exceed the equipment's fall height.
Fitting equipment like that? Call us on 01282 270214 with its fall height and we'll recommend the right surface.
Where to use them
- Nursery, pre-school and primary school yards
- Toddler zones and low-level play: sandpits, playhouses and ground-level play panels
- Paths and walkways around play equipment
- Garden play areas and patios
- Pub gardens, holiday parks and campsites
- Indoor soft play rooms, sports halls and gyms
Ramped edge strips
Ramped edge strips clip onto the interlocking edge of the tiles to make a tapered edge, so feet, buggies and wheelchairs don't catch on a raised 17mm step. Choose yellow to highlight the edge or black for a seamless finish. Each strip is 1m long: measure every exposed edge in metres and round up.
How to lay them
- Sweep a firm, level base clean: concrete, tarmac, paving or a compacted sub-base. Don't lay the tiles straight onto grass or soil.
- Give the base a slight fall so rainwater runs off the solid top.
- Start in one corner and press the interlocking edges together. A rubber mallet helps.
- Trim tiles to fit with a sharp utility knife and a straight edge.
- Clip ramped edge strips onto any edge people walk on or off.

Your questions answered
How many tiles do I need?
Each tile covers 0.84 m², so allow about 1.2 tiles per square metre, plus a few spare if you'll be cutting around obstacles. The calculator at the top of the page does the maths for you.
Can I lay them on grass?
No. These solid tiles need a firm, level base. To protect grass under play equipment, use our 23mm playground grass mats instead, which let the grass grow through.
Do they need gluing down?
No. The interlocking edges hold the tiles together as one surface, and the ramped edge strips finish the perimeter.
Can I use them under swings or a climbing frame?
Not as standard. Swings, and any equipment with a free fall height over 600mm, need impact-absorbing surfacing tested to BS EN 1177 with a high enough critical fall height. Call us with your equipment details and we'll advise.

Use the calculator at the top of this page. Enter the length and width of your area in metres and it works out how many you need, rounding up so you're never short.
Is it suitable for playgrounds?
Products marked BS EN 1177 are tested as impact-absorbing playground surfacing. The right thickness depends on the fall height of your play equipment, so tell us what you're installing and we'll advise before you order.
