Product overview

Stop ruts, mud and bald patches without losing your lawn. This heavy duty grass protection mesh is laid straight onto existing grass and pegged down. Within a few weeks the grass grows up through the open cells and the mesh becomes part of the turf, spreading the weight of wheels, hooves and feet so the ground stays firm and green.

What's in the box

  • 1 roll of green grass protection mesh, 2m wide × 25m long, covering 50m²
  • 200 green plastic anchor pegs, about 4 per m² (metal U-pins available on request)

Where to use it

  • Grass driveways and parking bays: cars, vans and light trailers
  • Overflow and event parking: weddings, shows, fêtes and sports clubs
  • Caravan and motorhome pitches: stops wheels sinking into and rutting the lawn
  • Field gateways and paddock entrances: where hooves and vehicles churn the ground into mud
  • Garden paths, dog runs and worn lawns: stops muddy tracks forming
  • Verges, footpaths and school fields: for councils, schools and landscapers

Why choose grass protection mesh

  • Keeps your grass: no digging, no sub-base and no hard surface
  • Stops rutting: spreads the load so wheels don't sink into soft ground
  • Fully permeable: rainwater soaks away naturally, a greener alternative to tarmac or block paving
  • Cut to fit: trim with strong scissors or snips, and lay rolls side by side for wider areas
  • Built to last: recycled HDPE that is UV stabilised and won't rot
  • Low cost per m²: far cheaper than grid pavers or hardstanding

Mesh or rubber grass mats?

Mesh is the most cost-effective choice for large areas and occasional traffic on firm, well-drained ground. For daily vehicle use, very soft or boggy ground, or busy horse gateways, choose our 23mm rubber grass mats or horse gateway mats.

Mesh is fine for reinforcing worn grass around play areas and school fields. It isn't impact-absorbing surfacing, though, so don't lay it under swings or climbing frames. Use our playground grass mats there instead.

Fitting tips from our team

  1. Lay it in the growing season. April to September is best. Grass grows through faster, and the mesh is more flexible in warm weather. If it's cold, unroll the mesh and leave it flat in the sun for a few hours before you peg it.
  2. Prepare the ground. Mow short, remove stones, and fill any ruts or hollows with topsoil so the mesh sits flat.
  3. Butt rolls edge to edge. Don't overlap them: overlaps lift and become a trip hazard.
  4. Peg it tight. Hammer in a peg roughly every 50cm along the edges and joins, then about every metre across the middle, pulling the mesh taut as you go.
  5. Give it time. Keep vehicles off for 3 to 6 weeks in the growing season, so the grass can knit through and lock the mesh in place. Walking on it straight away is fine.
  6. Mow high at first. Raise the mower blades for the first few cuts so they don't catch the mesh.

Temporary use for events

For a one-off event you can peg the mesh down for a few days, then lift it, roll it up and reuse it. Once the grass has grown through, the mesh is designed to stay in place permanently.

How to lay turf reinforcement mesh

Mesh goes straight onto existing grass. No digging or groundwork needed.

  1. Step 1

    Prepare the ground

Mow the grass short and clear any stones or debris so the mesh can sit flat.

  2. Step 2

    Unroll & peg

Unroll the mesh over the grass and fix it down with the anchor pegs supplied with each roll.

  3. Over the next few weeks

    Grass grows through

The grass grows up through the mesh and locks it in place, reinforcing the surface against wheels and feet.

How many do I need?

Use the calculator at the top of this page. Enter the length and width of your area in metres and it works out how many you need, rounding up so you're never short.

How long does it take for the grass to grow through?

In the growing season (spring to early autumn) grass usually starts to come through within a few weeks. It grows more slowly in winter. Water the area during dry spells.
