Description
Heavy duty rubber grass matting designed for horse gateways, stable yards, and paddock access points where hooves and vehicle traffic destroy grass and create mud in 2-3 weeks of wet weather.
Load Distribution Across Root Zone
Rubber grid structure spreads hoof impact (400-500kg per strike) and vehicle weight across the grass root zone rather than concentrating force on a single point. Prevents rutting in wet conditions and compaction damage during repeated use. Suitable for horses, ponies, tractors, Land Rovers, and horsebox access.
Grass Protection Mechanism
Open cell design allows grass growth through the mat (75-80% coverage when established) while the 23mm rubber layer shields roots from direct hoof strikes and metal horseshoe studs. Water drains freely through apertures at 200mm per hour—no pooling or waterlogged ground. Grass remains established even during winter months when gateways typically turn to mud.
Gateway Installation Method
Interlocking edges create a continuous surface across gateway width (typically 3-4m). Mats sit flush with ground level when bedded into a 20-30mm sand layer over existing soil. For sloped gateways, peg at corners using 250mm galvanised steel stakes through corner apertures. No concrete base or excavation required—install directly over grass.
Durability in Equestrian Environments
Resists tearing from shod hooves and metal horseshoe studs. Does not degrade when exposed to urine, manure, or pressure washing at 100 bar. Remains flexible in frost down to -15°C—no cracking or brittleness. UV-resistant compound prevents breakdown in summer sun. Typical lifespan exceeds 12 years in high-traffic equestrian use.
Reversible for Extended Lifespan
When surface shows wear after 6-8 years, lift mats and flip to use reverse side. Effectively doubles product lifespan in moderate-traffic areas.
Typical Equestrian Applications
- Field gateways and paddock entrances (3-4m width)
- Stable yard walkways and tie-up areas
- Around water troughs and feed stations
- Trailer and horsebox loading zones
- Bridleway access points
- Between stables and turnout fields
- Wash-down areas and grooming bays
Vehicle Traffic Capability
Suitable for agricultural vehicles, 4x4s, and horseboxes accessing fields for hay delivery, muck removal, and routine maintenance. Distributes tyre load to prevent rut formation in wet ground.
Installation Coverage
Mats interlock to cover required area. For a standard 3m gateway, order sufficient mats to create 3m width x 4m length (typical gateway approach distance). Check individual mat dimensions in product variants.
Material Performance
- 100% recycled rubber compound (SBR)
- Interlocking edge system (four sides)
- Open grid allows 75-80% grass coverage
- Drainage rate: 200mm per hour
- UV and frost resistant (-15°C to +50°C)
- Suitable for equine and vehicle traffic
- Reversible for extended lifespan
- Resistant to urine, manure, pressure washing
Maintenance in Stable Yards
Hose down to remove manure and debris. Grass continues to grow through apertures—mow at normal height. No painting, sealing, or treatments required. If individual mats become damaged, replace without disturbing surrounding area.
